An 800-year-old river spirit and his emotional-support cucumber. Kappa are real creatures from Japanese folklore — water yokai with a dish of water on their head that holds their strength, and a well-documented weakness for cucumber. CuCu is the cucumber. He has no arms, which is relevant later.

The characters are hand-drawn by an artist in Japan. Every pose of Kappa and CuCu you see started on paper, by hand — including all of it on this page.

We do also use AI for assisted world-building when it's useful — dropping the characters into a new place, building out a background for a scene that doesn't exist yet. We're not precious about saying so. Art is evolving in both directions right now, by hand and by machine, and the interesting stuff is in combining them rather than picking a side.

The hand-drawn set is the heart of it. That part doesn't change.

Because open memecoin chats fill up with spam, scam links and price complaints within about a day, and then nobody reads them. The channel is announcements and the buy bot only, so it stays worth having notifications on for.

The actual conversation happens on X — we reply to everyone there. We may open a smaller holders' room later if there's a real reason to; that's a maybe, not a plan, and there's no date on it.

Things we'd liketo make: more of the hand-drawn scenes animated, a small browser game, sticker packs, maybe something physical. None of that is promised, none of it has a date, and none of it is a reason to buy anything. If it happens it'll happen quietly and you'll see it.

The artist. Kappa and CuCu are theirs — drawn by hand in Japan long before any of this existed — and they're part of the project, helping shape where the two of them go next.

We'll say so out loud rather than quietly disappearing. A character that gets retired honestly is better than one that just goes silent, and the art stays up either way.
